Backup Care Tales from a Care@Work Insider

It’s mid-day Sunday – sunny and warm, the kind of afternoon you want to soak up and relax. Except… My husband is gone for the day and Olivia is running a fever of 102. 


At six months, it’s her first fever and I am a little worried (new mom jitters), so I call the doctor. The verdict: Just a little bug, but no daycare tomorrow. Both my husband and I work full-time, with packed schedules for the week. ::Double Sigh:: 

Luckily, both our companies offer family care benefits, including backup care, through Care@WorkDespite having a sick infant, as new parent who also happens to be an employee of, I got a little excited to try out our new Care@Work app.

Now that I'm back at work and Olivia is on the mend, I wanted to share my backup care experience with you.

Requesting Care

Care@Work is a customized experience for your family With Olivia in one hand and my phone in the other, I was able to submit a request for 9 a.m. Monday morning in less than five minutes. As soon as I got it set up, I felt like a weight was lifted – I would still be able to put in a full day’s work on Monday and could now focus on cuddling Olivia.

In no time, I received an app notification on my phone that our specialists were working on my request. I shouldn’t have been surprised, but I had never used backup care before and was pleased with how quickly they jumped on the request – on a Sunday afternoon, no less.

Later that afternoon, I also received a call to review some details of the request. The specialist wanted to ensure that they had a good understanding of Olivia’s condition, so that they could match us with the right caregiver.

By Sunday evening, I had received another notification that my caregiver had been booked for 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Success! The app showed an option to call her, but I didn’t get the chance, so our caregiver called me to work out the logistics -- my second pleasant surprise as a first-time backup care customer.

When It's Working at Home, It's Working at Work 

By the time my husband got home, I already had Monday figured out! All we needed to do was get a cranky baby through the night. (Though I mean Olivia, we all vied for the position.)

On Monday morning, we were all wiped out, but our caregiver, Victoria, arrived promptly at 9 a.m. 

As a nervous new mom, I wanted to be close by in case they needed me, so I chose to work from home. However, it was hardly necessary. All of our Care@Work backup caregivers are thoroughly vetted and go through training before they can become a part of our network. I felt really comfortable handing over Olivia and getting right to work.

As I dialed into my morning calls, I heard Victoria singing softly to Olivia and Olivia squealing with glee in response. I smiled and focused my attention back to the task at hand.
