Are nap rooms just another passing fad? A dreamy work perk designed to lure in Millennials? Well, maybe … but maybe not.

Noted nap enthusiast Arianna Huffington proclaimed nap rooms will soon be as common as conference rooms in an interview with "Today" on NBC. Before you scoff at the suggestion, consider that nap rooms are a newer trend, but taking a nap certainly isn’t.

Nap rooms provide a place in the office for nap lovers and sleep deprived alike to go and catch a couple Z’s and avoid the mid-afternoon slump. Without a designated spot to snooze, employees who seek a few moments of shut eye are dozing off at their desks or slipping out to their cars during lunch.

Considering that more than 40 percent of Americans get less that the recommended minimum hours of sleep per night, it’s pretty likely that some of your employees are feeling the effects of sleep deprivation while at work. As Huffington says, a nap in the middle of the afternoon could actually benefit us all.

Here are 7 ways your employees would benefit from a nap room.

    Sleep deprivation costs American companies $63.2 billion a year in lost productivity. Nap rooms encourage the sleep deprived to take the time to refresh and return to their work more productive.

    A cat nap can be a great way to step away from your work and relax when you’re feeling stressed. Resting your eyes for 20 minutes when you need a break from a stressful situation is much more beneficial than, say, browsing Facebook.

    Sleep deprivation is one of the most common signs of on-the-job burnout. It’s pretty hard to muster the energy to be enthusiastic about your work when you’re yawning every 10 seconds. Installing a nap room encourages employees to get the sleep that they need so they can quit resenting their work when they don’t get enough sleep.

    You wouldn’t want the surgeon removing your appendix to be sleepy – so why shouldn’t the same logic apply to the engineers working overnight on a super important product release? Dedicated space for napping allows for well rested, clear headed employees that can make better decisions at any hour of the day.

    Studies have found that you have a slower response time when you’re tired – even if you’re only slightly sleep-deprived. Without a decent night’s sleep, you’re more likely to make a mistake and compromise your work performance. Providing a place to catch a quick nap will allow your employees to remain focused and avoid costly mistakes.

    The right amount of sleep has endless health benefits. Your immunity, metabolism, blood pressure, and other vital functions are all tied to how much sleep you get – and naps have been shown to reverse some of the negative effects of sleep deprivation that might be forcing your employees to call in sick.

Remember, as with all employee benefits, your nap rooms will only be effective if your employees take advantage of them. Along with providing space for napping, make sure your organizational culture supports employees being able to catch a few quick Zzzzs when their productivity is waning. 

Will nap rooms ever be as common as conference rooms? Maybe not. But will they help reduce stress and boost productivity? You betcha.
